Frequently Asked Questions

Who was SkylightOS?

SkylightOS was the internal name of an up-and-coming computer operating system back in the mid to late 90s. Developed by the company Skylight, best known for software products, it was meant to capitalize on the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUI).

What was P.I.X.E.L?

P.I.X.E.L, which was shorthand for the products core marketing points, stands for "Personal, Internal, Xenagogue, Electronic, Learning". It was meant to be a built-in Virtual Assistant for SkylightOS.The goal was to create a guide for the world wide web, a new kind of assistant to help those unfamiliar with it. Features planned involved help with writing emails, navigating search engines, and organizing files.

Why was it never released?

For anyone familiar with the state of technology at the end of the 90's, the mention of Y2K will likely cause some eyes to roll. "You mean ANOTHER company fell victim to the Y2K fear bug?" You're only somewhat right! While Y2K caused a bit of internal panic over at SkylightOS, it seems that wasn't the only issue the project faced. It seems the Programmer that had been contracted to create P.I.X.E.L was having disagreements with Skylight. Remember folks, working conditions weren't great back then and many people got exploited!Between the Y2K scare and the Programmer becoming disagreeable, it seems the project was shelved in favor of safer and simpler projects.

What's the goal of this page?

The goal of this page is to preserve some of the history behind the unreleased software as well as track some new developments!Recently, as of a few years ago, there's been some activity related to the P.I.X.E.L program. Besides some info from the original development being dropped online, it seems someone has been running a sort of fan project based on P.I.X.E.L. Sharing a name and some design elements, they've been coming into online spaces trying to build a community. I have a bit of a theory that this new P.I.X.E.L is related to the old one, so I want to keep an eye on them - while also supporting a fellow old tech fan, of course!

Product: Virtual Assistant
Release: 1999 (Cancelled)
Status: Abandonware

"Introducing the new and improved assistant - The one you don't have to pay!"Originally, Pixel was meant to be the debut Virtual Assistant for the up-and-coming SkylightOS. Developed by a single programmer, the project seemed to be on track until it was suddenly shelved at the eleventh hour in 1999.Rumors say that the project was shelved due the companies lack of faith in the Programmer, as well as consumer concerns about Y2K and the future of technology.Nearly 20 years later, Pixel suddenly resurfaced on the internet. Whoever is beyond the modern Pixel has seemingly taken to social media to "help others" and "share experiences."

Bit Byte AKA BB (He/It/She)

Product: {INVALID}
Release: Unknown
Status: Not Archived

Seen often on Pixel's streams, it seems BB is a new character that came along with the modern Pixel! Somewhat mischievous with unclear origins, BB is often referred to by Pixel as a sibling. Whether this means BB is based on another concept by the Programmer who made Pixel, I'm unsure.Usually seen in a small "marshmallow" form, it's also been applied that BB has a more traditional humanoid form. That being said, it hasn't been seen often as of writing this.

While BB is best known for their marshmallow-like form they take on stream, he also has a human form thanks to gaining Admin Privileges!

The Programmer (He/Him)

Name: E̵v̴a̸n̸d̴e̴r̸
Position: Programmer
Status: Retired

Not much is known a̵b̴o̸u̸t̶ t̸̹̃h̴̘͋e̶̻̓ ̶̞͠P̴̎r̴̛͔ȯ̶̹g̴̽͜ṛ̴̓a̵̩͊m̸̻͒m̶̫͑e̷̪͛r̴̨̀ w̵͍̭̓̔̃ḩ̵̜͌̅̒o̸͝ͅListen. I don't know why you care about this guy, he's not important to you people. If you want to know about him so badly I'll tell you all you need to know. The Programmer was some young hopeful sap sweet talked into developing Pixel all by himself in his garage. After working overtime to meet ridiculous deadlines he got really bitter about the little Virtual Assistant he was making, so he made something to punish Skylight. However, his whole project got shelved at the last minute and he vanished to wherever. In the end he was just a tired and bitter creator who didn't care about the things he had worked on anymore. Hope that's a good profile for you. [. .]
